A little history
Selkirk's Common Riding commemorates the town's loss at the Battle of Flodden in 1513 — only one man returned to Selkirk from the battle. The annual riding of the marches is one of the most moving Borders Common Ridings. Walter Scott was Sheriff of Selkirk for 33 years.
The Common Riding in June is genuinely extraordinary — one of the most moving civic traditions in Scotland. Halliwell's House Museum for the local story. The Ettrick and Yarrow valleys for outstanding walking.
