Known for
Sherborne Abbey (one of England's finest, where Alfred the Great's brothers are buried), the two castles (Old and New, both extraordinary), Sherborne School (one of England's great public schools), and a Dorset town of exceptional beauty
A little history
Sherborne Abbey was the cathedral church of Wessex before Salisbury — Alfred the Great's brothers Æthelbald and Æthelberht are buried here. The Old Castle (a 12th century episcopal palace) and the New Castle (built by Sir Walter Raleigh in 1594) stand beside each other. Sherborne School occupies some of the finest historic buildings in Dorset.
The Abbey is genuinely magnificent and free — the fan vaulting is extraordinary. The two castles for the contrasting medieval and Elizabethan story. The town centre for excellent independent food.
