Explore Skipton
Known for
The best-preserved medieval castle in the North, the Springs Canal, the market (four times a week) and the gateway town to the Yorkshire Dales
A little history
Skipton's castle was built in the 11th century and survived the Civil War almost intact — one of the most complete medieval castles in England. The town's canal brought industrial wealth and the Leeds-Liverpool Canal still runs through the heart of town.
The Monday and Saturday markets are exceptional. The High Street has good independent shops. The canal towpath walk to Gargrave is lovely. The castle interior is worth every penny.
