Known for
Southwark Cathedral (London's oldest Gothic cathedral), Borough Market (London's oldest food market), Shakespeare's Globe Theatre, the Tate Modern, London Bridge, and one of London's most historically rich and culturally vital inner boroughs
A little history
Southwark is London's oldest settlement outside the City — the Romans crossed here at their London Bridge. Southwark Cathedral was begun in the 12th century. Shakespeare's Globe Theatre stood here from 1599. Chaucer's pilgrims began their journey from the Tabard Inn in Southwark. The area has more ancient heritage than almost anywhere in London.
Borough Market is genuinely outstanding — one of London's great food experiences. Southwark Cathedral is free and beautiful. Shakespeare's Globe for theatre in the round. Tate Modern (free) for world-class art.
