Known for
The Cathedral (the largest cathedral in England, built on the site of Britain's first Christian martyr), Verulamium (one of Britain's finest Roman towns, with a museum and theatre), the street market, and a Hertfordshire city of remarkable depth and beauty
A little history
Verulamium — the Roman town beneath modern St Albans — was the third largest in Roman Britain. St Alban — Britain's first Christian martyr, executed around 209 AD — is commemorated by the Cathedral begun in 793 AD. The Cathedral is the longest nave in England. The Roman theatre, museum and town walls are extraordinary.
The Cathedral is free and magnificent — the length of the nave is astonishing. Verulamium Museum is excellent. The Roman theatre is one of only two surviving in Britain. The Wednesday and Saturday markets are outstanding.
