Explore St Andrews
Known for
The home of golf (the Royal and Ancient Golf Club, the Old Course), St Andrews Cathedral ruins (once Scotland's largest), St Andrews University (Scotland's oldest), the East Sands beach, and the most complete small medieval city in Scotland
A little history
St Andrews was Scotland's ecclesiastical capital and the seat of the Archbishop. The Cathedral — now a magnificent ruin — was once the largest building in Scotland. The University, founded in 1413, is Scotland's oldest. Golf has been played on the Links since the 15th century — the R&A was founded in 1754.
The Old Course is the most famous golf course on earth — book the ballot well in advance. The Cathedral ruins are free and extraordinary. The West Sands beach for the Chariots of Fire sand. The town centre for excellent independent food.
