Thomas Gainsborough — the great 18th century portrait and landscape painter — was born in Sudbury in 1727 and grew up in the town. Gainsborough's House, his birthplace, is now an excellent museum and gallery. The River Stour — which Constable also painted downstream — flows through the town.
