Explore Swanage
Known for
The Swanage Railway (a heritage steam line to Corfe Castle and Wareham), Purbeck limestone (London's pavements are largely Swanage stone), the Victorian seaside character, and a Dorset resort town of great heritage
A little history
Swanage provided much of London's limestone paving and building stone — the town became known as 'the quarrymen's town'. John Mowlem and George Burt brought various London monuments and facades to Swanage when London was redeveloped. The Swanage Railway runs through the beautiful Purbeck Hills to Corfe Castle.
The Swanage Railway to Corfe Castle is outstanding. The stone heritage throughout the town. The Durlston Country Park for the cliff walks. The beach is excellent.
