Explore Tadcaster
Known for
The brewery town (Samuel Smith's and Molson Coors have major breweries here), the magnesium limestone (the stone that built York Minster), the River Wharfe, and a North Yorkshire market town that supplied York's building stone and beer
A little history
Tadcaster's magnesium limestone — the distinctive cream-coloured stone — built York Minster, the Shambles and much of historic York. The town has been a brewing centre for centuries — Samuel Smith's Brewery (the oldest in Yorkshire, founded 1758) and the former John Smith's works are major employers.
The Samuel Smith's brewery pubs are excellent — the Old Brewery is a genuinely historic experience. The River Wharfe walk and the viaduct. The stone heritage throughout the town.
