Known for
The Saxon capital of Mercia (Tamworth Castle was the royal palace of the Kings of Mercia), the Snowdome (indoor ski slope), the shopping (Ventura Park), and a Staffordshire town of ancient royal heritage
A little history
Tamworth was the royal capital of Mercia — the most powerful Anglo-Saxon kingdom — in the 8th and 9th centuries. Aethelflaed, the Lady of the Mercians, made it her capital. Tamworth Castle — built on a Saxon motte — still commands the town. Robert Peel, founder of the Metropolitan Police, was MP for Tamworth.
Tamworth Castle is genuinely excellent — the Saxon royal capital story is well told. The Snowdome for skiing in Staffordshire. The town centre and Ventura Park for retail.
