Explore Telford
Known for
The Ironbridge Gorge (a UNESCO World Heritage Site and the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution), the Iron Bridge (the world's first cast-iron bridge, 1779), and a Shropshire new town created around humanity's most significant industrial site
A little history
The Ironbridge Gorge is where the Industrial Revolution began — Abraham Darby first smelted iron with coke here in 1709. The Iron Bridge of 1779 was the world's first cast-iron structure. Ten museums in the gorge tell the story of how this small valley changed human history. Telford new town was created to house the area's population.
The Ironbridge Museums are genuinely extraordinary — the Iron Bridge, Blists Hill Victorian Town, the Coalport China Museum. Allow two full days. The gorge itself is beautiful.
