Known for
Tewkesbury Abbey (one of the finest Norman churches in England, surviving the Dissolution with its extraordinary tower), the Battle of Tewkesbury 1471 (the last Lancastrian stand in the Wars of the Roses), the medieval street plan, and a Gloucestershire market town of exceptional completeness
A little history
Tewkesbury Abbey — spared at the Dissolution because the townspeople bought it — has one of the finest Norman interiors in England and a magnificent tower. The Battle of Tewkesbury in 1471 effectively ended the Wars of the Roses, with the Lancastrian cause destroyed. The medieval street plan is virtually unchanged.
The Abbey is magnificent and free. The medieval alleyways behind the High Street are extraordinary. The battlefield walk. The Mythe Bridge walk for the Avon and Severn confluence views.
