Known for
The Great Bed of Ware (the famous bed mentioned by Shakespeare, now in the V&A), the New River (the 17th century water supply channel for London), and a Hertfordshire market town of literary and engineering significance
A little history
The Great Bed of Ware — a massive 16th century bed famous enough to be mentioned in Twelfth Night — is now in the Victoria and Albert Museum but was made in Ware. The New River, begun in 1609, carried fresh water 38 miles from Hertfordshire to London. Izaak Walton fished the Lea at Ware.
The Scott's Grotto in the town is genuinely extraordinary — one of England's finest shell grottos. The River Lea walk. The town centre for local character. The New River heritage.
