Known for
Windsor Castle (the largest inhabited castle in the world and the oldest royal residence in continuous occupation), the Long Walk (a 2.6-mile tree-lined avenue to the castle), Eton College, the Thames, and a Berkshire town of extraordinary royal presence
A little history
Windsor Castle has been a royal residence for almost 1,000 years — William the Conqueror built the first castle in 1070. St George's Chapel within the castle is the finest late Gothic building in England and the burial place of ten monarchs including Henry VIII and Charles III's parents. Eton College, founded 1440, is immediately across the river.
St George's Chapel is genuinely extraordinary — the late Gothic fan vaulting is magnificent. The Long Walk for the castle approach. Eton for the beautiful college. The Thames riverside walk.
